A sensor lighting camera, or a security camera that also provides motion detection lighting is one type of habitat lighting that may help improve security on residential property, by helping to avoid intruders. Sensor lighting cameras can be installed in entrances, patios, porches, and yards. They can also be attached to the exterior of garages, among other locations. The lights described in this brief article are for outdoor use.

Indeed, many homeowners in the United States have installed or wish to install on their residential property motion sensor lights to help increase the security of their home. The additional feature of having a camera in the lighting unit is an enhancement to the security features of the lighting that may help increase the security of the property. Moreover, some motion sensor outdoor lighting units also provide audio warnings, when the system is activated by motion.

A sensor lighting camera turns on when motion is detected. In other words, when the motion sensor in the lighting fixture senses motion, it triggers the light to light-up and the camera or video to turn on.  As aforementioned, some outdoor  sensor lights with camera also have an audio warning that is also triggered with motion.

The audio warnings are preset and/or can be recorded by the consumer, depending on the features offered by the specific unit. Moreover, sensor lighting cameras tend to have several setting options for the camera, light, and audio, given of course, when  audio is part of the features included in the outdoor sensor lighting fixture.  Moreover, some motion sensor lights are designed as an outdoor robotic security light.

Some outdoor motion sensor lighting units with cameras available to consumers are relatively inexpensive, starting at about $100.00  for example.

Moreover, motion sensor outdoor lighting is available by different manufacturers, for consumer consideration.  Whether it is an outdoor sensor light or several outdoor sensor lights, options are indeed available.

Indeed, installing lights that also have a camera and perhaps an audio warning when motion is detected on the exterior of residential property may help homeowners add another dimension of safety to their homes.

Pathway Lighting – Eight Factors for Consumer Consideration

Monday, May 10th, 2010

One benefit of home ownership is the option homeowners have to install the type of lighting they wish to use and enjoy on their property, whether it is for lighting home interiors or exteriors.  One particular type of home lighting is outdoor pathway lighting. Outdoor pathway lights provides illumination along pathways, and can help prevent accidental falls. Moreover, pathway lighting can add decoration and ambiance to the exterior of residences, helping homeowners complement the landscaping designs they wish to create on their property.

This article will present information about eight factors consumers may wish to consider prior to purchasing pathway lights:  These factors are:  (1) design; (2) type of light bulb and energy consumption; (3) power source; (4) hardwired vs. plug-in vs. electricity-free option; (5) purchasing individual pathway lights and components vs. purchasing  pathway lighting sets; (6) price; (7) purchasing pathway light designed for outdoor use; (8) purchasing pathway lighting certified by Underwriters Laboratories.

(1) Pathway Lighting Designs: Pathway lighting fixtures are available in many sizes, shapes, and  materials.  For example, they are available in different heights, widths, and depths.  Shapes include pineapple designs, flower designs, and Tiki designs, among the more plain and simple designs.  Moreover, the choices in material from which they are made include aluminum, metal, stainless steel, and plastic. The finishes from which to choose when purchasing outdoor pathway lighting are also plentiful, including bronze, stainless steel, tarnished copper, and black matte.  Additionally, the material used in the lens component of pathway lighting include glass, plastic, and polycarbonate.  Some pathway lighting products are designed to withstand harsh weather, while others are designed to be corrosion resistant. Clearly, some garden pathway lighting designs are more durable than others.

(2) Type of Light Bulb and Energy Consumption: Light bulbs, at times referred to as lamps, used in pathway lighting include incandescent, compact fluorescent, halogen, and light emitting diode, also referred to as LED.  When information about light bulbs is discussed,  the term watts and lumens are often used.  Watts is a measure of the amount of electrical power consumed, which may vary significantly  by the type of light bulb used.  Lumens is the amount of light emitted by the light bulb, which may also vary significantly by the type of light bulb used.

Incandescent light bulbs:  Incandescent light bulbs were invented and introduced for residential use more than one hundred years ago by Thomas Edison.   These light bulbs are not as energy efficient as fluorescent, LED, and halogen light bulbs.  Most of the energy used in incandescent light bulbs escapes as heat, and thus the bulbs get very hot.  The life of the light bulb tends to be significantly less than compact fluorescent lights, halogen lights, and LEDs.  Moreover, incandescent light bulbs use more electricity (watts) than compact fluorescent lights and halogen lights to produce the same amount of illumination.  However, with current LED technology, incandescent light bulbs used with landscape pathway lighting provide more light than pathway lighting that uses LEDs.  Nonetheless, LED technology continues to evolve.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs: High quality compact fluorescent light bulbs (cfls), such as the ones with the ENERGY STAR qualification, use about 25% of the energy consumed by an equivalent incandescent light bulb to emit the same amount of light. They work at low temperature and have a significantly longer life than incandescent light bulbs.  However, cfls have some mercury, so they should be disposed of with care, preferably, recycled.

Halogen light bulbs: Halogen light bulbs are somewhat  more efficient than incandescent light bulbs, and tend to last longer than incandescent light bulbs.  However, halogens get very hot.  They also need to be handled with care, as touching the bulb with hands reduces the life of the light bulb.

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDS): LEDS are very energy efficient, have a long life span,  and do not tend to get hot, releasing little heat.  They also contain no mercury.  However, they produce significantly less amount of light (lumens)  than incandescent light bulbs.  Thus, groups of LEDs are needed to adequately illuminate an area.  Nonetheless, as mentioned above, LED lighting technology continues to develop.  LED  quality also varies. LED lighting that is  ENERGY STAR qualified has been tested to meet high quality standards.

(3) Power Source: Different options are also available when it comes to selecting the power source the outdoor pathway lighting is designed to use. For example, pathway lighting is available using solar, low-voltage, and standard home voltage power sources.

Solar pathway lighting:  Solar pathway lighting uses the sun’s energy to provide illumination.  Thus, the sun is the power source for this type of exterior habitat lighting.  Solar pathway lights works by harnessing the sun’s energy during the day and emitting it at night.   In order for the solar pathway lights to work as designed, the solar panel components of the lighting must be placed in the direct sun.  The solar panels cannot be blocked by buildings, shrubs, trees, or any other object.  Otherwise, if the solar panel is not receiving direct sunlight, it will not work as designed.  However, when the solar pathway lighting is installed and functions as designed, depending on the design, they can provide 8-12 hours of illumination.  Solar pathway light tends to be easy to install, since no electricity is involved.  It is also ecologically friendly, given that it uses no electricity.

Low voltage pathway lighting: Low voltage pathway lighting usually uses a converter to convert the standard home voltage, which is about 120 volts in the United States, to low voltage, which is commonly12 volts in the United States for pathway lighting. Thus, low voltage pathway lighting tends to operate on 12 volts.  Because fewer volts are used, less electricity is consumed as compared to using standard home voltage. Moreover, LED pathway lighting is also available with low voltage pathway lighting, thus, LED pathway lighting that uses low voltage is energy efficient.  Additionally, given that low voltage is involved, some homeowners feel comfortable installing the low voltage pathway lighting themselves instead of hiring an electrician to install it.  Nonetheless, some electricity is still involved with low voltage pathway lights, therefore, consumers may wish to consider whether or not to hire an electrician to install the low voltage pathway lighting for them.

Standard home voltage: Pathway lighting that uses the standard home voltage of 120 volts in the United States is usually hardwired, which means that they are permanently connected to an electrical source.  They are not easily plugged and unplugged from an electrical wall outlet.  Thus, pathway lighting that uses standard home voltage usually needs to be installed by an electrician since high voltage is involved.

(4) Hardwired vs. Plug-in vs. Electricity-Free: Another option consumers have when shopping for exterior pathway lighting is whether the pathway lights will be hardwired, plugged-into an electrical outlet, or neither.  With hardwired designs, as aforementioned, the lighting fixture is permanently connected to an electrical source.  In other words, it cannot be easily plugged and unplugged from an electrical outlet on a wall.  This type of pathway lighting usually requires an electrician for installation,  since it generally involves working with the standard home voltage.  By comparison, low-voltage pathway lighting often involves plug-in, which is plugging-in an electrical cord into a wall outlet.  By comparison, electricity-free pathway lighting is the type that uses no electricity to illuminate, therefore, permanent electrical connections and wall outlets are not used.   Solar pathway lighting is an example of this type of lighting, given it is electricity-free.

Additional factors consumers may wish to consider before purchasing pathway lights include the following:

(5)  Does the consumer wish to purchase  individual lighting fixtures or a pathway lighting set?

(6)  What is the price range the consumer will pay for the pathway lights?  Individual units range, for example, from $4.00 for a single pathway light to $200.00 for a post lamp that illuminates pathways.  As with many consumer products, the quality of the construction and components of the lighting tend to impact price.

(7)  Is the pathway lighting and all its components designed for outdoor use?  This is very important for safety purposes, since the lighting will be exposed to the natural elements such as moisture and wind.

(8)  Is the pathway lighting certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL)?  Underwriters Laboratories is an independent product safety certification organization that independently tests products for safety standards.

Indeed, many options are available to consumers when it comes to choosing pathway lighting for their residences.  Considering the aforementioned factors prior to purchasing outdoor pathway lighting may help consumers select the pathway lights that will best help them provide and enjoy the illumination they wish to use on the exterior of their home.

Home Lighting – Three Outdoor Options

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Plentiful home lighting options are available to consumers these days when they are considering  purchasing lighting for the home. This article presents brief information about three types of home lighting. These three popular types of home light include light emitting diode (LED) home lighting, solar home lighting, and low voltage home lighting.  While these three types of lighting are also available for indoor use, the focus of this article will be on lighting home exteriors. Each type of habitat lighting is briefly presented below.

(1) LED home lighting is a type of light that lasts significantly longer than incandescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs. These types of  lights start to dim gradually instead of burning out completely when the life of the lighting is consumed. With white LEDs, bugs are not attracted to them, since they do not emit ultraviolet light. LEDs are energy efficient and contain no toxic mercury. However, when compared with incandescent home lighting, they do not provide as bright a light. Therefore, multiple LEDs tend to be  needed to provide adequate lighting. LED lighting is available in solar home lighting as well as in low voltage home lighting, among other types of lighting for the home, including motion sensor lights.

(2) Solar home lighting works by harnessing the sun’s energy during the day and emitting it at night. In order for the solar lighting to work as designed, the solar panel component of the lighting must be placed in the direct sun light. Therefore, the solar panels cannot be blocked by any object. The solar panels also need to be kept clean. Solar lighting is a source of reusable energy, given that it uses the sun’s energy and rechargeable batteries in its design. Thus, solar lighting tends to be ecologically friendly. Consumers will want to be aware that  with the current design of solar lighting, however, it does not tend to be a reliable form of home lighting if placed in areas that do not receive abundant direct sunlight and/or in climates that are not sunny.

(3) Low voltage home lighting uses a low voltage power source.  In other words, it converts the standard home voltage to low voltage, usually via a transformer.  Since less energy is used with low voltage lighting, it tends to be better for the natural environment. The lighting also tends to be more reliable than solar lighting, since it does not depend on needing direct sunlight to work. However, since the voltage is low, low voltage lighting does not tend to be bright.

Common usage of LED, solar, and low voltage lighting include home garden lighting and home landscape lighting.  Examples of LED home garden lighting include LED string lights and LED pond lights. Examples of  solar home garden lighting include solar stepping stones and solar pathway lighting.  Examples of low voltage  home garden lighting include flood lights and bollards.

Similarly, examples of LED home landscape lighting include pathway lighting and spotlights.  Examples of solar home landscape lighting include solar deck lights and rock flood lights.  And examples of low voltage home landscape lighting include flood lights and path lights.

An important commonality among LEDs, solar, and low voltage home lighting is their reduced or non-use of electricity. As previously mentioned, LEDs are energy efficient, using significantly less electricity when compared with incandescent lighting. Similarly, with low voltage lighting, given that the home voltage is reduced, less electricity is consumed. Solar lighting uses no electricity. Thus, all these forms of lighting can help consumers use less electricity, and thus reduce their electricity bill. Moreover, because LEDs, low voltage, and solar home lighting use less or no electricity when compared with incandescent lighting, they tend to be better for the natural environment. Consumers will want to keep in mind, however, when shopping for garden and/or home landscape lighting, that the quality of the components in the home lights vary.  Therefore, consumers may wish to get more information about the quality of the light fixtures they are considering purchasing, prior to buying them.

Nonetheless, whether it is LED home lighting, solar home lighting, or low voltage home lighting, many choices are available to consumers from which to select the type of home lighting fixtures they wish to install and enjoy on the exterior of their home, whether they are installing new outdoor home lighting throughout their property, or adding to the exterior home lighting they already have. Moreover, as previously mentioned, the types of home lighting aforementioned use less electricity or no electricity, and thus tend to reduce the negative impact on the natural environment. Indeed, home lighting facilitates enhancing the ambiance of the home, by helping to create just the right illumination homeowners seek.

Patio Lights: Lights to Enjoy

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Once considered an optional part of the home, the patio has gained home room status in today’s housing market for some consumers. The patio is essential outdoor living space for some homeowners, and some homeowners are making it an area worthy of illumination.  Some homeowners want a well designed patio with home lighting that will enhance the patio space, and patio lights are the major player in making that outdoor space more functional, especially after dusk.

Patio lighting complements and sets the ambiance for relaxing or entertaining regardless of the time of day.  However, the size of the area and the amount of light needed to illuminate the patio space will help determine the size of fixture to install and/or the number of fixtures to install.  Bulb choice and the ability to dim the intensity of the bulb are options available to enhance the patio’s ambiance.  Bulb choices are growing thanks to new designs, including energy efficient LED models. Incandescent, halogen, and fluorescent bulb fixtures are all popular options. Incandescent bulbs have been known to work well for general habitat lighting, while halogen bulbs are used as high intensity lighting in small areas.  Fluorescent bulbs are known for their longevity, as well as their ability to stay cool.

The lighting fixtures that are available for outdoor patio lights are as diverse as patios, in terms of design, finishes, and mounting features. If consumers want to accent a garden or a specific seating area, solar patio lights, outdoor chandeliers, or external wall fixtures are all effective, depending on the space and the patio design. Outdoor solar post lighting is another way to light a patio without adding more cost to the monthly electricity bill.  Moreover, old electric post lamp fixtures are still  a possible choice for people who want to add antique charm, while providing ample light for a walkway or entrance. Additionally, for increased security to the patio area, motion sensor lights, including a type that includes a camera in the fixture’s design, called a sensor lighting camera, is also available.

When installing outdoor patio lighting,  illuminating steps or other features around the patio should also be considered for safety purposes and to help avoid falls. Solar powered lights are easy to place under steps or they can be set into the steps.  Moreover, solar pathway lighting can be easily installed in most instances.  In fact,  solar patio lights can be used in almost any area around the patio or garden, where the sun shines brightly.

Indeed, many options are available to homeowners when they are considering lighting home exteriors with patio lights. Given the different choices, homeowners may wish to start their search for patio lights on the Internet, as a lot of information is available on lighting websites.  Enjoy.

Outdoor Chandelier – Six Considerations

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

As we extend our living space to include the outdoors, an outdoor chandelier not only lights an area, but can be decorative as well. In fact, many options in design and size are available, whether the outdoor chandelier is small, medium, or large, to complement the exterior decor of homes.  However, consumers may wish to consider the following factors prior to purchasing outdoor chandelier lighting:

1) Purchase an  outdoor chandelier that has been certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for outdoor use, as the chandelier will be exposed to the natural elements, such as rain, wind, moisture etc.  Underwriters Laboratories is an independent product safety certification organization, that independently test products for safety standards.

2)  Make sure all auxiliary components needed for the outdoor chandelier to illuminate are also certified by Underwriters Laboratories for outdoor use.

3) Consult and hire a licensed electrician to install the outdoor chandelier, if the consumer is not a licensed electrician.

4) Consider the type of material the chandelier lamp shade is made of on the outdoor chandelier, if equipped with chandelier lamp shades.  Although the light bulbs may be in a protected area, there are still elements such as snow or rain that may blow into the area where the habitat lighting hangs.  Therefore,  consumers may wish  to consider an outdoor chandelier that has  waterproof  shades to help reduce possible weather related issues.

5) Consider where the outdoor chandelier will be hung prior to purchase.  If the outdoor chandelier lights will be hung over a dining table or where other activities will take place, then consumers may wish to consider an outdoor chandelier that casts light downward to the surface,  instead of  upward, away from the surface.  Whether the outdoor chandelier casts the light upward or downward will affect the intensity of the light in the living space.

6) Consider the size of the area to be illuminated with the outdoor chandelier. Will the use of one or two large outdoor chandeliers be better than perhaps two or three smaller ones well placed?

Given the choices in outdoor chandeliers for consumers to consider when lighting home exteriors, they may wish to be well informed prior to purchasing one, as there are various factors to consider, including safety.  A good place to start getting more information about home lighting is on the Internet, as the Internet also provides pictures of outdoor chandeliers, visually assisting consumers with options available.  Indeed, outdoor chandeliers can extend the living space to the outdoors by the illumination they provide.  Nonetheless,  it is a good idea to be well informed prior to purchasing one.

Solar Patio Lights – Are They Functional And Economical?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Solar patio lights are designed for different functions, including solar security lights, solar spot lights, solar flood lights, and solar pathway lights, among other solar patio lighting design options.

Solar patio lights can be a good choice for providing home lighting to the exterior of residences.  However, because they are designed to work by harnessing the sun’s energy during the day and emitting it at night, the placement of the solar patio lights is very important for proper functioning and for adequately lighting home exteriors.

In other words, the solar panel of the solar patio lights needs to be placed directly  in the sun so that the solar panels receive the sun’s energy. Placing the solar panels of the solar patio lighting in shaded areas will not allow the solar patio lights to work as designed.  Moreover, the solar panels need to be kept clean from such things as bird droppings, so that they can work  as the manufacturer intended.  If the solar panels are dirty, they will not work as designed.  This factor needs to be kept in mind, as it requires homeowners to clean and maintain the solar panels for the outdoor solar patio lights to work as designed. Nonetheless, maintenance tends to be simple.

However, if the solar powered patio lights are placed in sunny locations that have a sunny climate and are maintained, the solar patio lights offer an economical alternative to patio lights that get their illumination by consuming electricity.  Moreover, solar patio lights also tend to be better for the natural environment, since they use the sun’s illumination to provide the light.

Given all the choices in design and style with the solar patio light, consumers may wish to commence their search for these lights on the Internet .  The Internet provides  information about solar patio lights that can be useful to consumers.  Moreover, habitat lighting stores often provide pictures of the solar patio lights available to consumers, potentially helping them visually with the choices available for their use and enjoyment.

Patio Lights: Five Types To Consider

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Patio lights provide outdoor illumination and can help homeowners create the ambiance they wish.  Moreover, patio lights can also increase safety, by helping to prevent accidental falls as well as potentially deter intruders.  In fact, some lights that can be installed in patios, such as the motion sensor lights, also have an attached camera, sometimes called a sensor lighting camera. Nonetheless, before considering the type of patio lighting to purchase, homeowners may wish to first consider the following factors:

(1) Does the homeowner wish to complement the decor of their patio, or will the decor be eclectic?

(2) How much lighting is desired?

(3) Does the homeowner want portable patio lights and/or permanent lighting?

(4) How big an area does the homeowner wish to illuminate?

(5) Does the homeowner plan to use one light, or multiple lights?

(6) Does the patio include steps, water features, decks, or other areas the homeowner wishes to illuminate?

After answering the above questions, homeowners may then wish to consider the following five types of patio lights, among other options available:

I.  Standard Hardwired Patio Lights: Many styles and sizes of standard patio lighting are available, including post mounts, wall  mounts, hanging lights, and pathway lighting, among many other choices available to consumers. Factors to consider with standard hardwired patio lights include the following:

(1) It is important for safety purposes, that these patio lights be rated for outdoor use, since they will be  exposed to the natural elements, such as moisture, wind, sun etc.

(2) Consumers may also wish to consider purchasing standard patio lights that have been certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).  Underwriters Laboratories is an independent product safety certification organization that tests products for safety standards.

(3)  Consumers may wish to purchase standard patio lights that have been rated to be energy efficient. Energy efficient lighting consumes less energy, tends to cost less to use when compared with non-energy efficient lighting, and tends to be better for the natural environment.

(4) Consumers may also wish to install a dimmer switch that is compatible with the patio light,  as a dimmer switch will allow homeowners the option to adjust the amount of light emitted by the patio light at any given moment. For example, the light can be adjusted from bright to dim, or degrees of lighting in between.

II. Low Voltage Patio Lights: These lights are available in different designs and brightness. They offer energy conservation by reducing electricity consumption, and thus can lower electricity bills.  Factors to consider with low voltage patio lights for home lighting include the following:

(1) Low voltage patio lights use a converter to typically convert 120 volts to 12 volts.  It is important to make sure the converter converts the volts down and not up.  Because the volts are converted to be lower, there tends to be less risk of shock and  serious accidents from electricity.

(2) The transformer needs to be rated for the amount of wattage for which it will be used. Most transformers are rated to use 100 to 300 watts.

(3) Converter and all its lighting components must be compatible.

(4) Converters are available in different qualities, so consumers may wish to research this factor  before purchase.

(5) Consumers may want to consider if they want to install a dimmer switch that is compatible with the low voltage lighting.

(6)  Consumers may want to consider if they want to place the low voltage lighting on a timer that is compatible with the low voltage lighting.

(7) All component of the low voltage lighting must be rated for outdoor use.

(8)  Consumers may also wish to purchase low voltage lighting that has been certified by Underwriters Laboratories, as Underwriters Laboratories tests for safety standards.

III.   Solar Patio Lights: Solar patio lighting is also an option to use for outdoor patio lights.  Such designs as solar pathway lighting, solar post lights, solar patio deck lighting, and solar spot lights, are among options available to consumers. Indeed, solar lights have become quite popular, since they use the sun's energy and cost little to operate. However, homeowners may wish to keep the following factors in mind before purchasing solar lights:

(1)  As the name suggests, solar lights are designed to work by harnessing the sun's energy during the day and emitting it after dusk.  However, the solar panels on the lights need direct sunlight to function as the manufacture intended. As such, in locations where the sun does not shine much, and/or on cloudy rainy days, the lights do not tend to work well. Consequently, in locations that are shaded as well as during cloudy days, the solar lights are not reliable for outdoor habitat lighting.

(2)  The solar panels must be kept clean for the lights to function as designed. Since the lights are outdoors, the lights required maintenance by cleaning the solar panels.

(3)  Solar lights tend to be dim.

IV. Lantern Patio Lights: Portable lanterns are another option for patio lighting.  Portable lanterns  tend to be small lights that homeowners can carry and place where they wish. The light output does not tend to be as bright as a standard patio light that is hardwired.  Nonetheless,  lantern patio lights are an option that can be used alone, in multiples, or in conjunction with standard patio lights and other patio lighting for lighting home exteriors.

V. Candles: Candles are another option for patio lighting. They can be used  individually, in multiples, or with candle lighting designed to be used in outdoor chandeliers. Indeed, whether the candles are used as individual candles or in a candle chandelier, they can add ambiance to the patio setting; however, consumers need to take the proper precautions to avoid accidental fires if they use candles for outdoor patio light.

Thus, after deciding which type of patio light, the placement of patio lights, and how many patio lights the homeowner wishes to install on their property, they may wish to consider whether or not they will hire a licensed electrician to install their outdoor patio lighting. While candles and lanterns do not require an electrician, and while solar lights and low voltage lighting tend to be easier to install than standard patio lights, consumers will still want to consider whether or not they need the help of a licensed electrician to install their patio lights.  Standard patio lights use the standard home voltage, and the low voltage lights involve using a transformer.  Therefore, consumers will want to consider hiring a licensed electrician if they plan to use standard patio lights and/or are not comfortable installing low voltage lights themselves, if the consumer is not an electrician.

Finally, the Internet tends to be a good place to research patio lights. A lot of information is available to consumers, in addition to  pictures of the different patio lights  available to illuminate their property.  As such, consumers may wish to commence their search for patio lights by looking on the Internet.

Outdoor Sconce Considerations

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

An outdoor sconce can be used to provide home lighting to the exterior of homes.  However, before homeowners invest in outdoor sconces, they will want to make certain the outdoor sconce they choose is specifically designed for exterior use to ensure that the sconce can safely withstand the moisture and other natural elements to which it will be exposed. Additionally, it is a good idea for consumers to check the energy rating for the fixture and select an outdoor wall sconce that has been rated to be energy efficient.

An outdoor sconce that has been rated to be energy efficient will save energy, cost less to use, and tends to be better for the natural environment.  Additionally, consumers may wish to consider purchasing an outdoor sconce that has been certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).  Underwriters Laboratories is an independent product safety certification organization, that independently tests products for safety standards.

Outdoor sconce lights can be used in many exterior areas of residences.  Most obviously, they can be used for lighting home entry areas.  Consumers have a variety of styles and finishes from which to choose.  Selecting a style that directs the light downward may be helpful if there are steps at the entrance of the property.  Consumers may also wish to consider placing an outdoor wall sconce on each side of the door in order to provide sufficient habitat lighting for safety purposes.

A patio may also be a good place to install outdoor sconces.  While entertaining, homeowners may want to have the patio well lit.  On the other hand, the homeowner might prefer a softly illuminated space for an evening of relaxation.  A dimmer switch is also an option available to consumers, to help control the intensity of light emitted by the outdoor sconce light at any given moment.  If consumers choose to install a dimmer switch, they will want to make sure that it is compatible with the outdoor sconce fixture they are choosing to install.

The use of an outdoor sconce is not limited to the entrance or patio area of homes  If homeowners have a carport or a detached garage, they may want to consider installing an outdoor sconce there.  Placing an outdoor sconce on either side of the carport or garage entrance can be both decorative and functional.  Moreover, if homeowners have an attractive garden shed or additional storage building in their yard, they may be able to use an outdoor sconce to illuminate that area at night.

These are just a few ideas where outdoor wall sconces may potentially be used and enjoyed on residential property.  Homeowners may wish to look on the Internet for additional information.  Moreover, lighting websites often provide pictures of outdoor sconces available for purchase, potentially helping homeowners visually with options available.

Outdoor Chandelier – Considering Outdoor Chandeliers

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Since the original creation of the candle chandelier many years ago, chandeliers have been developed into many styles, shapes and sizes for lighting home interiors and exteriors. Interestingly enough, though, when some consumers think of chandeliers, they often think of indoor elaborate light fixtures.

What is sometimes overlooked, is that chandeliers are also available for outdoor habitat lighting.   Small outdoor chandeliers and large outdoor chandeliers are indeed available to consumers shopping in the United States.  This article presents brief information about the outdoor chandelier.

The choices in style and size of outdoor chandeliers are plentiful, providing consumers many options to complement the decor in their yards and/or to create the decor they wish.  For example, one style of an outdoor chandelier is the outdoor candle chandelier.  This style uses candles to provide illumination.

If a real candle burning chandelier is not what the homeowner is seeking due to having children, pets, or for any other reason,  simulated outdoor candle chandeliers are also available.  Simulated outdoor candle chandeliers simulate candlelight using light bulbs.  However, as previously mentioned, many styles in addition to the outdoor candle chandelier are available for consumers to choose and create the home lighting, decor, and ambiance they wish for the exterior of their homes.

Before purchasing outdoor chandelier lighting, however, consumers may wish to consider the following  eight factors:

(1)  It is very important for safety reasons that the  outdoor chandelier be rated for outdoor use, as the outdoor chandelier will be exposed to the natural elements, such as rain, moisture, wind etc.  Moreover, any other auxiliary component that is needed for the chandelier to illuminate, electric cords for example, must also be rated for outdoor use for safety purposes.

(2)   It is also a good idea that the outdoor chandelier be rated by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).  Underwriters Laboratories is an independent  product safety certification organization, that independently tests products for safety standards.

(3)  Another factor consumers may wish to consider, is purchasing outdoor chandeliers that are rated to be energy efficient.  Energy efficient outdoor chandelier lighting  saves on energy consumption when compared to comparable non-energy efficient outdoor chandeliers, often translating into lower electricity costs for consumers.  Moreover, consuming less energy is better for the natural environment.

(4) Consumers may also wish to consider the number of  lights on the outdoor chandelier, as well as the total wattage on the fixture.  This factor will affect the amount of light emitted by the outdoor chandelier, as well as the amount of energy consumed by the outdoor chandelier lights.

(5) Consumers may also want to keep in mind that insects may be attracted to the outdoor chandelier light.  As such, consumers may wish to consider purchasing a chandelier that has the bulbs covered.  Another option may be to purchase an outdoor chandelier that has down light instead of up light.  What this means is that the opening of the chandelier lamp shades are down, not up.  With lamp shades that are designed as up light, there is a greater chance of insects and debris to collect in the lamp shade.

(6) Since chandeliers are designed to hang, consumers will want to choose a  location to hang the chandelier that will avoid  people from bumping into it.

(7)  Outdoor chandeliers can be heavy, as such, the weight of the chandelier must be considered to ensure proper and safe installation.

(8) Sometimes consumers forget about the requirements to keep the hanging outdoor chandelier clean.   Consumers may want to keep in mind that the less intricate and ornate the chandelier, the easier  and less time consuming  it tends to take to clean it.

Indeed, many people in the United States enjoy spending time in their gardens, yards, and patios.  By illuminating these exterior areas of their homes, homeowners are able to extend the time they enjoy in their gardens, yards, and patios to the night time hours.  Clearly, lighting facilitates participating in activities, merely by the illumination it provides.  Outdoor chandelier lighting is an option for providing light to the exterior of homes.

One last thought, a good place to commence the initial search for outdoor chandeliers is by looking on the Internet. In fact, the Home Depot store, which is a large home improvement store, has an in-house brand of chandelier called Hampton Bay. Perhaps consumers shopping for an outdoor chandelier will find a Hampton Bay chandelier for the outdoor of their home at the Home Depot website. If not at Home Depot, many online stores sell outdoor chandeliers. Moreover, home lighting stores often provide pictures of outdoor chandeliers available, thus providing  consumers with visual assistance of the potential options.  Enjoy.

Outdoor Christmas lights add cheer and a festive decor to homes.  In the United States, decorating homes with outdoor Christmas lights has become popular.  This article presents brief information about four types of outdoor Christmas lights available, seven tips homeowners may wish to consider prior to installing this type of home lighting, and seven safety tips homeowners may wish to implement.

Many different types of outdoor Christmas lights are available for lighting home exteriors, providing many choices for decorating the exterior of homes for the holidays.  Below, brief information about outdoor Christmas rope lights, outdoor LED Christmas lights, commercial outdoor Christmas lights, and battery operated outdoor Christmas lights is presented.

Rope Lights

: Outdoor Christmas rope lights are lights designed as part of a rope.  Rope lights are decorative and available in different colors, sizes and length.  They are also flexible, allowing the use of these lights for different decorative applications.  For example, rope lights can be used to decorate trees, columns, and roof tops, among other options.

Light-Emitting Diodes (LED) Lights

:Outdoor LED Christmas lights are designed to be energy efficient and long lasting.  The purchase price is usually higher than other Christmas lights, but outdoor LED Christmas lights are designed to use less electricity and offer long bulb life, potentially saving money with electricity bills. LED lighting offers many choices for holiday use, including LED net lights to light-up trees and shrubs; LED wide angle lens lights to provide illumination in all directions; and LED icicle lights to line homes and decks with light.  Indeed outdoor Christmas LED lights are available in many designs and offer many choices.

Commercial Lights: Commercial outdoor Christmas lights are also available in many choices and offer commercial grade wiring.  In other words, commercial outdoor Christmas lights offer the option to string together more lights safely for more ambitious decorating projects that require greater light and energy consumption.  Examples of commercial outdoor Christmas lights include mini light sets, icicle light sets, and light string sets.  These lights can be used creatively in many different ways.

Battery-Operated Lights: Battery operated outdoor Christmas lights offer convenience, as they operate using batteries, eliminating the need to connect to electrical outlets.  Battery powered outdoor Christmas lights can be used for example, to light-up wreaths, holiday ornaments, and foliage, among other options.

Tips: Decorating homes with outdoor Christmas lights requires time and effort.  Following are seven tips homeowners may wish to consider prior to decorating the exterior of their homes for the holidays.

(1)  Measure areas where wish to place Christmas outdoor lights.

(2)  Check location and number of electrical outlets available to use for Christmas outdoor lighting.

(3)  Decide how elaborate want the decorations to be and use measurements taken of areas where wish to place outdoor Christmas lights to purchase quantity of lights will need.

(4)  Select type, style, and size of  Christmas outdoor lights wish to use.

(5)  Test lights prior to placing them outdoors.  Dispose of broken or damaged lights and cords (or return to place of purchase  if new).

(6)  Put Christmas outdoor lights on timer(s) to better manage the amount of time the Christmas lights are on.

(7)  Keep safety in mind.

Safety: Below are seven safety measures homeowners may wish to implement when decorating the exterior of their homes for the holidays.

(1)  Make sure the Christmas lights have been rated for outdoor use.

(2)  Make sure if using extension cords, that they too have been rated for outdoor use.

(3)  Use UL (Underwriters Laboratories) rated outdoor Christmas lights.  These lights have been rated independently for safe use under designated conditions.

(4)  As previously noted, check lights and cords for damage and dispose of damaged ones.

(5)  Never nail or staple through the wires or cords of outdoor Christmas lights.

(6)  Do not overload electrical outlets or extension cords.

(7)  Do not exceed the manufacturer’s recommended number of connections, when connecting multiple strands of light.

For many people, Christmas is a festive time of year.  Decorating homes with outdoor Christmas habitat lighting may enhance the festive ambiance.  Enjoy.

Outdoor lights can be used for various purposes. Outdoor light designs are available for numerous functions. This article briefly discusses possible usage of outdoor lighting.

1.  Safety: Outdoor lights can increase personal safety on the property, as outdoor light fixtures may help avoid accidental falls. Pathway lighting is available for this purpose.  Additionally, lighting for stairs, water features, and other areas of the property that may help increase safety is available for lighting home exteriors.

2.  Children and Pet Safety. Some outdoor lights are designed to be cordless, as they are powered with solar light and/or batteries.  These types of  lights can reduce potential hazards associated with electrical cords.

3.  Security. Outdoor lighting fixtures can add security to the property by lighting-up dark areas of the home.   Security lights may help avoid trespassers and home break-ins. Motion sensor lights, spotlights, floodlights, and placing outside lights in dark areas of the exterior of homes increases security.  Moreover, some lights, such as the sensor lighting camera, also have a camera designed as part of the habitat lighting fixture, potentially further increasing safety on the property.

4.  Entertainment. Outdoor lights can be used to expand the home entertainment area available for use after sunset.  Lights can be used not only for lighting purposes, but to create the ambiance homeowners wish to create.  Outdoor lights can help create a fun, romantic or festive ambiance, among other possibilities.  String lights, lanterns, the outdoor chandelier, and lamps that simulate candle light are among the outdoor lights that may be used for this purpose. Additionally, some outdoor lights, such as the Hampton Bay ceiling fans, as well as other ceiling fans, offer lights with fans that help to circulate the air and keep the living space cooler.

5.  Property Enhancement. Outdoor lighting can add visual appeal to the property by allowing the property to be seen during the night.  Pathway lights, accent lights, and recessed lights are among the many possibilities. Installing outdoor lights in homes also allow homeowners to be able to see and enjoy their property at night.

6.  Convenience. As mentioned above, some outdoor lighting is designed to be cordless.  As such, these designs can be very convenient, especially in property areas that are hard to reach using electrical outlets.  Lantern solar lights, solar pathway lighting, and outdoor lights that are battery operated may be helpful in these types of situations.

As stated in this article, outdoor lights can be used for different purposes.  Moreover, since outdoor lights are available in many styles and designs, it is likely that homeowners will be able to find the type and design of outdoor home lighting that will meet their outdoor lighting requirements.  A good place to commence the search may be online. Lighting stores often provide pictures and information about the different types and styles of outdoor lights available to homeowners.
