Chandelier Lamp Shades – Five Considerations

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Chandeliers may provide the type and style of home lighting that homeowners seek.  However, many choices are available from which to choose in terms of style, size, materials, and designs when purchasing a chandelier for lighting home interiors and exteriors.  Moreover, some chandeliers have lamp shades to cover the bulbs, while other designs do not include lamp shades. This article briefly discusses five factors regarding lamp shades for chandeliers consumers may wish to consider when purchasing chandeliers that have lamp shades included in their design.

(1) Is the chandelier for indoor or outdoor use?  Outdoor chandeliers will need to be designed for outdoor use for safety purposes related to weather. As such, if the chandelier is for outdoor use, the chandelier lamp shades should also be made for outdoor use, given their exposure to the outdoor elements such as mist, rain, snow, fog, wind, etc.

(2) If the chandelier lighting is going to be used outdoors, consumers may want to consider the design of the chandelier lamp shade and consider purchasing a chandelier that uses lamp shades that are designed in such a way that it is more difficult for the lamp to collect insects and outdoor debris.

(3) How many light bulbs does the chandelier have? This factor will determine the number of chandelier lamp shades the chandelier lighting fixture is designed to use.

(4) Does the consumer like the design and color of the lamp shades that are included with the habitat lighting fixture, or will they purchase different lamp shades that they like better?

(5)  Does the consumer want the lamp shades to complement the design of the chandelier? Does the consumer want the lamp shades to complement the living space in which they will be used? Or does the consumer prefer a more eclectic style and feel to the light fixture and room?

Moreover, in some instances, homeowners may wish to replace the lamp shades on their existing chandelier instead of replacing the entire lighting fixture. Replacing the chandelier lamp shades can change the decor and ambiance of the living space in which the chandelier is hung, and in some cases cost less than replacing the entire lighting fixture.

One last thought, given all the choices in chandelier lamp shades, consumers may wish to first search on the Internet to become better informed of the options available when it comes to purchasing lamp shades for chandeliers.  Enjoy.

Outdoor Chandelier – Six Considerations

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

As we extend our living space to include the outdoors, an outdoor chandelier not only lights an area, but can be decorative as well. In fact, many options in design and size are available, whether the outdoor chandelier is small, medium, or large, to complement the exterior decor of homes.  However, consumers may wish to consider the following factors prior to purchasing outdoor chandelier lighting:

1) Purchase an  outdoor chandelier that has been certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for outdoor use, as the chandelier will be exposed to the natural elements, such as rain, wind, moisture etc.  Underwriters Laboratories is an independent product safety certification organization, that independently test products for safety standards.

2)  Make sure all auxiliary components needed for the outdoor chandelier to illuminate are also certified by Underwriters Laboratories for outdoor use.

3) Consult and hire a licensed electrician to install the outdoor chandelier, if the consumer is not a licensed electrician.

4) Consider the type of material the chandelier lamp shade is made of on the outdoor chandelier, if equipped with chandelier lamp shades.  Although the light bulbs may be in a protected area, there are still elements such as snow or rain that may blow into the area where the habitat lighting hangs.  Therefore,  consumers may wish  to consider an outdoor chandelier that has  waterproof  shades to help reduce possible weather related issues.

5) Consider where the outdoor chandelier will be hung prior to purchase.  If the outdoor chandelier lights will be hung over a dining table or where other activities will take place, then consumers may wish to consider an outdoor chandelier that casts light downward to the surface,  instead of  upward, away from the surface.  Whether the outdoor chandelier casts the light upward or downward will affect the intensity of the light in the living space.

6) Consider the size of the area to be illuminated with the outdoor chandelier. Will the use of one or two large outdoor chandeliers be better than perhaps two or three smaller ones well placed?

Given the choices in outdoor chandeliers for consumers to consider when lighting home exteriors, they may wish to be well informed prior to purchasing one, as there are various factors to consider, including safety.  A good place to start getting more information about home lighting is on the Internet, as the Internet also provides pictures of outdoor chandeliers, visually assisting consumers with options available.  Indeed, outdoor chandeliers can extend the living space to the outdoors by the illumination they provide.  Nonetheless,  it is a good idea to be well informed prior to purchasing one.

Outdoor Chandeliers: Safety Considerations

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Extending the time one enjoys outdoors to the hours after dusk can be done by lighting home exteriors.  Indeed,  home lighting facilitates completion of tasks and provides illumination for enjoyment as well.  Outdoor chandeliers is one lighting option consumers may wish to consider, when contemplating installing lights to the exterior of their homes.

Some consumers think of chandeliers as lighting fixtures to be used  indoors only.  What some consumers may not realize is that outdoor chandelier lights are also available in many styles and sizes.   However, since the habitat lighting is placed outdoors and is exposed to the natural elements, such as rain, moisture, wind, snow etc., certain precautions must be implemented for safety purposes.

When considering outdoor lighting, including outdoor chandeliers, only lighting fixtures that have been rated  for outdoor use should be used.  Additionally, any auxiliary component that will be used for the illumination of the outdoor chandelier lighting should also be rated for outdoor use to ensure safety.

Moreover, consumers may wish to consider purchasing outdoor chandeliers that have been approved by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).  Underwriters Laboratories is an independent product safety certification organization, that independently tests products for safety standards.  Additionally, hiring and consulting with a licensed electrician to install the outdoor chandelier can also be prudent for safety purposes.

A good place for consumers to commence searching for outdoor chandelier lights is on the Internet, as the Internet offers consumers a lot of information about outdoor chandelier lighting.  Additionally, lighting stores that advertise on the Internet often provide pictures of the outdoor chandeliers available for purchase, potentially assisting consumers visually with options available.

Indeed, many choices of outdoor chandeliers are available for consumer use and enjoyment, however, consumers will be well served to be informed about safety precautions to keep in mind before purchasing outdoor chandeliers.

Candle Chandelier – Two Types To Enjoy

Monday, December 7th, 2009

The candle chandelier has been used for many years.  In fact, the candlestick chandelier was the first style of chandelier for lighting home interiors and exteriors. Candles were used with both the indoor and outdoor chandelier. Chandeliers have since evolved into many styles and designs, although candle chandeliers are still available today to provide home lighting.

Basically, two types of the candle light chandelier are available these days.  The genuine candle burning style, and the candle chandelier that uses simulated candle light, using light bulbs.  Both types of candle chandeliers are available to help consumers create the ambiance they wish to create in their homes.  Indeed, candle light can help create a relaxing peaceful ambiance. However,  for the consumer who is not comfortable having candles burning in their home for safety purposes and/or because they have children and/or pets or for other reasons, candle chandeliers that use simulated candle light may be a good choice to create the ambiance and habitat lighting consumers wish to create in their homes.

As previously mentioned, simulated candle chandeliers use light bulbs to simulate real candle light.  Moreover, for consumers who wish to use simulated candle light instead of candle sticks for illumination, they may also wish to consider purchasing  a candle simulated chandelier that is energy efficient, as energy efficient chandeliers will use less energy and help save on energy bills. Moreover, using less electricity tends to be better for the natural environment.

Additionally, choosing to enjoy a simulated candle light chandelier instead of a candle chandelier that uses burning candles, allows the homeowner more options in selecting the intensity of light emitted by the chandelier at any given moment.   By merely installing a dimmer switch that is compatible with the simulated candle chandelier, the homeowner has the option to set the dimmer switch to dim, bright, or degrees of lighting  in between dim and bright.

A good place to shop for candle chandeliers is on the Internet. In fact, the Home Depot store, which is a large home improvement store, has an in-house brand of chandelier called the Hampton Bay Chandelier . Perhaps consumers will find a candle chandelier offered by the Home Depot stores they like. Additionally, there are other online lighting stores that sell candle chandeliers.

Indeed, candle chandeliers are still available, albeit with updated designs and options to help homeowners create the candle chandelier lighting they would like for their homes.  Enjoy.

Outdoor Chandelier – Considering Outdoor Chandeliers

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Since the original creation of the candle chandelier many years ago, chandeliers have been developed into many styles, shapes and sizes for lighting home interiors and exteriors. Interestingly enough, though, when some consumers think of chandeliers, they often think of indoor elaborate light fixtures.

What is sometimes overlooked, is that chandeliers are also available for outdoor habitat lighting.   Small outdoor chandeliers and large outdoor chandeliers are indeed available to consumers shopping in the United States.  This article presents brief information about the outdoor chandelier.

The choices in style and size of outdoor chandeliers are plentiful, providing consumers many options to complement the decor in their yards and/or to create the decor they wish.  For example, one style of an outdoor chandelier is the outdoor candle chandelier.  This style uses candles to provide illumination.

If a real candle burning chandelier is not what the homeowner is seeking due to having children, pets, or for any other reason,  simulated outdoor candle chandeliers are also available.  Simulated outdoor candle chandeliers simulate candlelight using light bulbs.  However, as previously mentioned, many styles in addition to the outdoor candle chandelier are available for consumers to choose and create the home lighting, decor, and ambiance they wish for the exterior of their homes.

Before purchasing outdoor chandelier lighting, however, consumers may wish to consider the following  eight factors:

(1)  It is very important for safety reasons that the  outdoor chandelier be rated for outdoor use, as the outdoor chandelier will be exposed to the natural elements, such as rain, moisture, wind etc.  Moreover, any other auxiliary component that is needed for the chandelier to illuminate, electric cords for example, must also be rated for outdoor use for safety purposes.

(2)   It is also a good idea that the outdoor chandelier be rated by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).  Underwriters Laboratories is an independent  product safety certification organization, that independently tests products for safety standards.

(3)  Another factor consumers may wish to consider, is purchasing outdoor chandeliers that are rated to be energy efficient.  Energy efficient outdoor chandelier lighting  saves on energy consumption when compared to comparable non-energy efficient outdoor chandeliers, often translating into lower electricity costs for consumers.  Moreover, consuming less energy is better for the natural environment.

(4) Consumers may also wish to consider the number of  lights on the outdoor chandelier, as well as the total wattage on the fixture.  This factor will affect the amount of light emitted by the outdoor chandelier, as well as the amount of energy consumed by the outdoor chandelier lights.

(5) Consumers may also want to keep in mind that insects may be attracted to the outdoor chandelier light.  As such, consumers may wish to consider purchasing a chandelier that has the bulbs covered.  Another option may be to purchase an outdoor chandelier that has down light instead of up light.  What this means is that the opening of the chandelier lamp shades are down, not up.  With lamp shades that are designed as up light, there is a greater chance of insects and debris to collect in the lamp shade.

(6) Since chandeliers are designed to hang, consumers will want to choose a  location to hang the chandelier that will avoid  people from bumping into it.

(7)  Outdoor chandeliers can be heavy, as such, the weight of the chandelier must be considered to ensure proper and safe installation.

(8) Sometimes consumers forget about the requirements to keep the hanging outdoor chandelier clean.   Consumers may want to keep in mind that the less intricate and ornate the chandelier, the easier  and less time consuming  it tends to take to clean it.

Indeed, many people in the United States enjoy spending time in their gardens, yards, and patios.  By illuminating these exterior areas of their homes, homeowners are able to extend the time they enjoy in their gardens, yards, and patios to the night time hours.  Clearly, lighting facilitates participating in activities, merely by the illumination it provides.  Outdoor chandelier lighting is an option for providing light to the exterior of homes.

One last thought, a good place to commence the initial search for outdoor chandeliers is by looking on the Internet. In fact, the Home Depot store, which is a large home improvement store, has an in-house brand of chandelier called Hampton Bay. Perhaps consumers shopping for an outdoor chandelier will find a Hampton Bay chandelier for the outdoor of their home at the Home Depot website. If not at Home Depot, many online stores sell outdoor chandeliers. Moreover, home lighting stores often provide pictures of outdoor chandeliers available, thus providing  consumers with visual assistance of the potential options.  Enjoy.

Ceiling Light: Considering Ceiling Lights

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Ceiling light provides general lighting, which is also oftentimes referred to as ambient lighting. Many styles and designs of ceiling light are available for home lighting.  This article presents brief information about six styles of ceiling lights available for lighting home interiors, in addition to presenting other information consumers may wish to consider prior to purchasing  this type of habitat lighting.  The six styles of ceiling light are as follows:

(1) The flush mount ceiling light, which is designed to have no space between the ceiling light fixture and the ceiling.  These lights tend to be a good choice for rooms with low ceilings, where hanging light fixtures would be awkward or impractical due to the low ceiling.

(2) The semi flush ceiling light, which is designed to hang lights just a little distance from the ceiling.  This style of ceiling light is in between full mounted ceiling lights which are flush with the ceiling,  and lights designed to hang.

(3) The hanging lights, which as the name suggests, hang from the ceiling. Examples of hanging lights include the pendant, and the indoor and outdoor chandelier. Hanging lights can bring the light source closer into the room.

(4) The recessed ceiling lights, which are lights that are fixed into the ceiling.  These lights can be a good option in rooms where the ceilings are low and where lights designed to hang may not fit, or be awkward due to the low ceiling.

(5) Track lighting, which is designed to provide much flexibility with lighting, including the direction and intensity of the light used.

(6) Ceiling fans with lights, which in addition to offering light and decor, also offer additional functionality, especially during hot days. For example, some Hampton Bay ceiling fans offer different features for consumer enjoyment.

Ceiling lights do not take-up floor space, so consumers may want to consider this factor when considering  the type of  light they wish to use in the living space.  Consequently, ceiling lights may be complementary to small rooms among other room sizes, and may also help create an open feeling to the living space.

Another factor consumers may wish to consider prior to purchasing ceiling lighting is whether or not the ceiling light fixture is rated to be energy efficient.  Modern ceiling lights often offer energy efficiency.   Energy efficient ceiling lights fixtures use less energy than comparable non-energy efficient ceiling fixtures.  This factor usually results in less energy usage and consequently lower energy bills.  Additionally, ceiling lights that are rated to be energy efficient are also reportedly better for the natural environment.

Lastly, consumers may wish to research their choices of ceiling light prior to purchase.  A good place to commence their search is on the internet.  Lighting stores often provide information and pictures of different ceiling light available, and thus provide consumers with visual assistance of the options.  Enjoy.

Chandelier Lighting – Consumer Considerations

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Chandeliers offer illumination, decor, and the potential option to create the ambiance homeowners desire for the rooms in their homes.  No longer are chandeliers only used in foyers of  large expensive homes. Today, chandeliers are used in living rooms, foyers, and  family rooms among other living spaces of  both upscale and modest homes.

Modern, antique, crystal, mini, and candle chandeliers are among the many options of chandelier lighting fixtures available to consumers.  Although many options in decor, style, and size are indeed available, this article briefly focuses on the home lighting aspects of the chandelier.  Five chandelier habitat lighting options consumers may wish to consider prior to purchasing chandelier lights are as follows:

(1)  Whether or not the chandelier light fixture has an energy efficient rating.  Chandelier lighting fixtures that have an energy efficient rating tend to use less energy and consequently cost less to use.  They are also reportedly better for the natural environment.

(2)  Whether or not energy efficient bulbs are available for the chandelier light.  Energy efficient bulbs will consume less energy and save the consumer money, in addition to being more beneficial to the natural environment.

(3)  Whether or not the chandelier uses standard bulbs or specialty bulbs, as specialty bulbs tend to cost more and tend to not be as readily available as standard bulbs.  Consumers may also wish to inquire if the standard bulbs and specialty bulbs are available with the energy efficient option.

(4)  Number of lights on the fixture.  This factor will effect  the  amount of light emitted by the chandelier as well as the amount of energy consumed by the  chandelier lighting fixture.

(5)  Adding a compatible dimmer switch to control the intensity of the light emitted by the chandelier.  By adding a compatible dimmer switch, consumers can enjoy bright light, dim light, or degrees of light in between bright and dim.  Additionally, dimmer switches provide consumers the option to change the ambiance of the room, by merely changing the intensity of the lighting used.  Dimmer switches  also offer consumers the option to save energy, when dimming the lights.

Consumers may be well served to consider the chandelier lighting factors mentioned above, in addition to considering the size, shape, and style of chandelier they are considering purchasing.  A good place to commence searching for chandelier light fixtures is on the Internet.  In fact, the Home Depot, which is a large home improvement store, has a selection of chandeliers from which to choose, including their in-house brand name of the Hampton Bay chandelier.

The Home Depot also has a website for consumers to find information about the products they sell, as well as the option to shop at their store website. If consumers do not find what they are looking for at the Home Depot, other lighting websites are available. Lighting stores often provide helpful information online about chandeliers, as well as provide pictures of the many chandelier options available for lighting home interiors and exteriors.  Enjoy.

Chandeliers: Enjoying Candle Chandeliers, Mini Chandeliers, and Crystal Chandeliers

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Chandeliers have been available for hundreds of years.  Originally, chandeliers were used to hold candlesticks for lighting home interiors and exteriors, among other spaces that needed to be lit to be functional. Today, chandelier light is available in  numerous designs, shapes, sizes, and styles.  This article briefly presents information on three of the many chandelier designs available for home lighting.   Brief information about candle chandeliers, mini-chandeliers, and crystal chandeliers is presented.  It may be beneficial to keep in mind, however, that within each style,  different options of chandelier lights are available.  This article also briefly presents additional general information about chandeliers.

Candle chandeliers: As previously stated, candle chandeliers were the original style of chandelier used hundreds of years ago to provide light. Both outdoor chandeliers and indoor chandeliers used candles to illuminate. Today, candle chandeliers are still available, albeit with many more style options.  Current candle chandelier designs offer chandeliers that use burning candles for illumination. This style of candle chandelier can offer a relaxing candle-lit ambiance.  However, if one has safety concerns about having candles burning in the home,  simulated candle light is also available, using light bulbs. Thus, whether the candle chandelier uses burning candles or simulated candle light, candle chandeliers offer the option to create a relaxing peaceful ambiance.

Mini chandeliers: The mini chandelier is, as the name suggests, a small chandelier.   These chandeliers are also called chandelettes.  Mini chandeliers are available in numerous designs and styles and can add decor and lighting to small rooms.  Mini chandeliers may also complement other lighting present in the room.  Mini chandeliers tend to weigh less than the larger chandeliers and may be easier to install than the larger heavier designs.

Crystal chandeliers:  Crystal chandeliers are available in different sizes, not just the large size often associated with mansions, classic movies, and wealth.  Crystal chandelier lighting  is made using different types of crystal.  The type of crystal used to make these ornate light fixtures include Swarovski, Rock, Imperial, Regal, and Italian.  The crystal chandelier is also available in clear and color crystal.  As with different chandelier types,  the different types of crystal vary by quality and price.  Indeed, crystal chandeliers can offer an elegant ambiance, if that is the atmosphere the homeowner wishes to create.

Chandelier lighting:  As to the lighting aspect of chandeliers, options include number of lights available on the fixture, as well as total wattage available per fixture.  Another consideration of chandelier lighting is whether the chandelier uses specialty bulbs or standard ones.  Specialty bulbs tend to be more expensive and not as easy to find.  Homeowners may also wish to consider energy usage prior to purchasing a chandelier.  Clearly, the higher the wattage used by the fixture, and the more bulbs the chandelier has, the higher the energy cost tends to be.  However, chandeliers that are designed to be energy efficiency cost less to use.  Moreover, by adding a compatible dimmer switch to control the intensity of the light emitted by the chandelier, dim light, bright light, or degrees of light in between can be enjoyed.  Dimmers also provide homeowners with the option to change the ambiance of the room, by merely changing the intensity of the lighting used.

Chandelier weight: Homeowners will be well served by carefully considering the weight of the chandelier prior to purchasing it.  Chandeliers can significantly vary in weight, depending on material and size of the lighting fixture.  Weight is very important to consider for proper and safe installation.

Chandelier cleaning requirements: Homeowners may also wish to consider, prior to purchasing a chandelier, the cleaning requirements of the chandelier in order to keep the light fixture sparkling.  A more intricate, ornate chandelier tends to require more time to clean. Moreover, if the chandelier has chandelier lamp shades, can the shades be cleaned or will they need to be replaced?

Whether homeowners wish to purchase a candle chandelier, a mini chandelier, a crystal chandelier, or any other chandelier design, homeowners may wish to look on the Internet for lighting stores that sell chandeliers. More specifically, the Home Depot store, which is a large home improvement store, offers their in-store brand of lighting fixtures called Hampton Bay. The Hampton Bay chandelier is available in different designs and sizes, at the Home Depot website. However, many additional habitat lighting options are available at the Home Depot, other than the Hampton Bay brand. Additionally, on the Internet, numerous other websites are available that provide pictures of the numerous different chandeliers available in the marketplace, providing visual assistance with what is available.

Chandelier Purchase Considerations

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Chandeliers provide light, decor, and can create the desired ambiance in homes.  Selecting the chandelier light that will help create the mood and atmosphere one seeks can enhance the home living experience. This article offers brief background information about chandelier lighting before discussing some factors homeowners may wish to consider before buying indoor home chandelier light fixtures.

Chandelier is a French word and is generally defined as a decorative lighting fixture that holds several lights and is hung from the ceiling.  Chandelier lighting has been used for hundreds of years.  Originally, chandeliers were used to hold candlesticks for lighting home interiors and exteriors, among other spaces, thus the candle chandelier was created.

Chandelier Style: Chandelier lights are made from numerous materials, including wrought iron, brass, crystal, glass, wood, antler, and metal.  Chandeliers are also available in many styles and shapes, including art deco, rustic, modern, traditional, and colonial, among many other options.  Additionally, chandeliers can be ordered to be custom made.

Chandelier Size: Chandelier lamps are available in different sizes.  Choosing the right size chandelier is very important, so as to provide the desired look, feel, and functionality of the room.  It is important to view the area where the chandelier will be placed, then to use a chandelier size appropriate for the area.  In other words, for a small room, one does not want to place a chandelier light fixture that is too big, overpowering and providing excessive light in the room.  At the same time, one does not want to place a small chandelier in a room that is too big for the size of the lighting area provided by the chandelier.

Chandeliers and Ambiance: Chandeliers can be placed in most rooms in the home including bedrooms, living rooms, sitting rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, dens, foyers, hallways, and libraries among other spaces.  Factors homeowners may wish to consider prior to purchasing a chandelier lamp include whether or not they wish to complement the style and theme of the room and its furnishings with a design that will indeed complement the room where the chandelier will be hung.  Homeowners may also wish to consider the style of the home when choosing the chandelier.  Moreover, homeowners may also want to consider the amount of light they would like the chandelier to provide and the ambiance they wish to create.

Chandelier Installation: Another very important factor to consider is installation.  Chandeliers, depending on material and size, may be heavier than other types of habitat lighting fixtures. Consequently, this factor must be considered for proper and safe installation.

Chandelier Energy Usage: Another factor homeowners may want to consider before purchasing a chandelier is its usage of energy and the cost to replace the bulbs.  Clearly, the larger the fixture, the higher the voltage used, and the more bulbs it has, the higher the energy cost tend to be.  However, chandeliers with an energy efficiency rating tend to be more efficient, and thus cost less to use.

Chandelier Cleaning: Lastly, a factor homeowners may wish to consider prior to purchasing a chandelier is the cleaning requirements of  the chandelier in order to keep the light and fixture sparkling.   A more intricate ornate chandelier tends to require more time to clean.

One last thought, a good way to research the size and style of chandeliers available for home lighting is on the Internet. Moreover, the Home Depot, which is a large home improvement store, has an in-house brand of products called Hampton Bay. The Hampton Bay chandelier brand offers different designs. Additionally, Home Depot sells chandeliers with other brand names. And clearly, if consumers do not want to shop at the Home Depot, many online lighting stores are available that sell chandeliers at their website. Indeed, starting an online search for a chandelier may be a good way to start researching the options.  Enjoy.
