Patio Lights: Lights to Enjoy

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Once considered an optional part of the home, the patio has gained home room status in today’s housing market for some consumers. The patio is essential outdoor living space for some homeowners, and some homeowners are making it an area worthy of illumination.  Some homeowners want a well designed patio with home lighting that will enhance the patio space, and patio lights are the major player in making that outdoor space more functional, especially after dusk.

Patio lighting complements and sets the ambiance for relaxing or entertaining regardless of the time of day.  However, the size of the area and the amount of light needed to illuminate the patio space will help determine the size of fixture to install and/or the number of fixtures to install.  Bulb choice and the ability to dim the intensity of the bulb are options available to enhance the patio’s ambiance.  Bulb choices are growing thanks to new designs, including energy efficient LED models. Incandescent, halogen, and fluorescent bulb fixtures are all popular options. Incandescent bulbs have been known to work well for general habitat lighting, while halogen bulbs are used as high intensity lighting in small areas.  Fluorescent bulbs are known for their longevity, as well as their ability to stay cool.

The lighting fixtures that are available for outdoor patio lights are as diverse as patios, in terms of design, finishes, and mounting features. If consumers want to accent a garden or a specific seating area, solar patio lights, outdoor chandeliers, or external wall fixtures are all effective, depending on the space and the patio design. Outdoor solar post lighting is another way to light a patio without adding more cost to the monthly electricity bill.  Moreover, old electric post lamp fixtures are still  a possible choice for people who want to add antique charm, while providing ample light for a walkway or entrance. Additionally, for increased security to the patio area, motion sensor lights, including a type that includes a camera in the fixture’s design, called a sensor lighting camera, is also available.

When installing outdoor patio lighting,  illuminating steps or other features around the patio should also be considered for safety purposes and to help avoid falls. Solar powered lights are easy to place under steps or they can be set into the steps.  Moreover, solar pathway lighting can be easily installed in most instances.  In fact,  solar patio lights can be used in almost any area around the patio or garden, where the sun shines brightly.

Indeed, many options are available to homeowners when they are considering lighting home exteriors with patio lights. Given the different choices, homeowners may wish to start their search for patio lights on the Internet, as a lot of information is available on lighting websites.  Enjoy.
