Outdoor Christmas Lights

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Outdoor Christmas lights add cheer and a festive decor to homes.  In the United States, decorating homes with outdoor Christmas lights has become popular.  This article presents brief information about four types of outdoor Christmas lights available, seven tips homeowners may wish to consider prior to installing this type of home lighting, and seven safety tips homeowners may wish to implement.

Many different types of outdoor Christmas lights are available for lighting home exteriors, providing many choices for decorating the exterior of homes for the holidays.  Below, brief information about outdoor Christmas rope lights, outdoor LED Christmas lights, commercial outdoor Christmas lights, and battery operated outdoor Christmas lights is presented.

Rope Lights

: Outdoor Christmas rope lights are lights designed as part of a rope.  Rope lights are decorative and available in different colors, sizes and length.  They are also flexible, allowing the use of these lights for different decorative applications.  For example, rope lights can be used to decorate trees, columns, and roof tops, among other options.

Light-Emitting Diodes (LED) Lights

:Outdoor LED Christmas lights are designed to be energy efficient and long lasting.  The purchase price is usually higher than other Christmas lights, but outdoor LED Christmas lights are designed to use less electricity and offer long bulb life, potentially saving money with electricity bills. LED lighting offers many choices for holiday use, including LED net lights to light-up trees and shrubs; LED wide angle lens lights to provide illumination in all directions; and LED icicle lights to line homes and decks with light.  Indeed outdoor Christmas LED lights are available in many designs and offer many choices.

Commercial Lights: Commercial outdoor Christmas lights are also available in many choices and offer commercial grade wiring.  In other words, commercial outdoor Christmas lights offer the option to string together more lights safely for more ambitious decorating projects that require greater light and energy consumption.  Examples of commercial outdoor Christmas lights include mini light sets, icicle light sets, and light string sets.  These lights can be used creatively in many different ways.

Battery-Operated Lights: Battery operated outdoor Christmas lights offer convenience, as they operate using batteries, eliminating the need to connect to electrical outlets.  Battery powered outdoor Christmas lights can be used for example, to light-up wreaths, holiday ornaments, and foliage, among other options.

Tips: Decorating homes with outdoor Christmas lights requires time and effort.  Following are seven tips homeowners may wish to consider prior to decorating the exterior of their homes for the holidays.

(1)  Measure areas where wish to place Christmas outdoor lights.

(2)  Check location and number of electrical outlets available to use for Christmas outdoor lighting.

(3)  Decide how elaborate want the decorations to be and use measurements taken of areas where wish to place outdoor Christmas lights to purchase quantity of lights will need.

(4)  Select type, style, and size of  Christmas outdoor lights wish to use.

(5)  Test lights prior to placing them outdoors.  Dispose of broken or damaged lights and cords (or return to place of purchase  if new).

(6)  Put Christmas outdoor lights on timer(s) to better manage the amount of time the Christmas lights are on.

(7)  Keep safety in mind.

Safety: Below are seven safety measures homeowners may wish to implement when decorating the exterior of their homes for the holidays.

(1)  Make sure the Christmas lights have been rated for outdoor use.

(2)  Make sure if using extension cords, that they too have been rated for outdoor use.

(3)  Use UL (Underwriters Laboratories) rated outdoor Christmas lights.  These lights have been rated independently for safe use under designated conditions.

(4)  As previously noted, check lights and cords for damage and dispose of damaged ones.

(5)  Never nail or staple through the wires or cords of outdoor Christmas lights.

(6)  Do not overload electrical outlets or extension cords.

Ceiling Lights With Fans

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Home lighting can significantly influence the look and functionality of any room in homes.  Clearly, lighting allows homeowners to see at night and to participate in various activities due to the illumination provided by the habitat lighting fixtures. More specifically, ceiling lights offer both functionality and decor. Ceiling lights provide general lighting, which is oftentimes referred to as ambient lighting.  Ceiling lights with fans offer additional functionality.  This article provides information on indoor ceiling lights that also have fans as part of their design.

As previously noted, ceiling fan lights offer decor and added functionality as compared to regular ceiling lights. Ceiling fan light offers both light and the added benefit of adding comfort to the living space during hot and cold days, as explained below.  Ceiling fans with lights can be used in different rooms of homes, including bedrooms, kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms, and family rooms.  Moreover, ceiling fan lighting  is available in many styles and designs, allowing the option to complement home decor.

Functions: In addition to providing light and decor, a ceiling fan light fixture offers  the possibility of  making rooms cooler in the summer by improving airflow, and warmer in the winter by improving heat distribution with designs that offer this feature as part of the ceiling lighting fixture.  Also, ceiling fans with lights offer the possibility of using the air conditioner less, thus potentially reducing energy costs.

Options:  While conventional ceiling fan lights operate with pull cords, newer models offer additional options.  For example, wall controls enable home owners to turn fans on and off or to adjust fan speed without having to pull on the ceiling fan light cord.  Dimmer switches allow homeowners to control the light intensity in the room with the wall switch.  Remote controls allow homeowners to control ceiling lighting fixtures by remote, allowing the option to turn the light and/or fan on and off, and to control the fan speed.  Additionally, some ceiling fans with lights come mostly pre-assembled, offering easier installation.

Energy Efficiency:  Some ceiling fan lights are rated to be energy efficient.  Ceiling light fixtures that have an energy efficient rating, such as ceiling lights with the ENERGY STAR rating, are designed to reduce energy consumption and energy costs.  Thus, ceiling fans with lights that are rated to be energy efficient are designed to ensure efficient operation and cost effectiveness. For example, Hampton Bay ceiling fans offer several options of ENERGY STAR rated ceiling fans.

Size of Fan: It is a good idea to measure the room where the ceiling light will be installed and to then select a fan size designed for the room size.  Installing a ceiling fan light with a fan that is not large enough for the room dimensions will not effectively circulate the air in the room.

Ceiling Types:  Ceiling type can also influence the design of the ceiling light that will best be suited for the particular ceiling style.  For example, an angled, low, or high ceiling requires a ceiling light fixture designed for these types of ceilings, in order for the ceiling fan lights to function properly.

Installation:  Often, the ceiling fan light replaces the lighter ceiling light that is installed in the center of the room.  When homeowners replace regular ceiling lights with ceiling lights that have a fan, the weight of the ceiling fan fixture must be considered for proper and safe installation. Ceiling light fixtures designed with fans are heavy and as such, require particular attention to proper installation to ensure safety.

Quality:  As with most products, quality of ceiling fans with lights vary.  For example, the quality of the motor of the ceiling fan can effect the loudness and vibration of the fan when in use.  As such, homeowners may find it helpful to research ceiling lighting prior to purchase.  Sometimes, homeowners can find reviews of ceiling lights on the internet to help with product selection. Moreover, homeowners may wish to start their search of ceiling light fixtures on the internet, as many stores that sell ceiling lights offer pictures of ceiling fans with lights, assisting homeowners visually with options available for lighting home interiors.  Additionally, these websites often provide helpful product information.

Chandeliers: Enjoying Candle Chandeliers, Mini Chandeliers, and Crystal Chandeliers

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Chandeliers have been available for hundreds of years.  Originally, chandeliers were used to hold candlesticks for lighting home interiors and exteriors, among other spaces that needed to be lit to be functional. Today, chandelier light is available in  numerous designs, shapes, sizes, and styles.  This article briefly presents information on three of the many chandelier designs available for home lighting.   Brief information about candle chandeliers, mini-chandeliers, and crystal chandeliers is presented.  It may be beneficial to keep in mind, however, that within each style,  different options of chandelier lights are available.  This article also briefly presents additional general information about chandeliers.

Candle chandeliers: As previously stated, candle chandeliers were the original style of chandelier used hundreds of years ago to provide light. Both outdoor chandeliers and indoor chandeliers used candles to illuminate. Today, candle chandeliers are still available, albeit with many more style options.  Current candle chandelier designs offer chandeliers that use burning candles for illumination. This style of candle chandelier can offer a relaxing candle-lit ambiance.  However, if one has safety concerns about having candles burning in the home,  simulated candle light is also available, using light bulbs. Thus, whether the candle chandelier uses burning candles or simulated candle light, candle chandeliers offer the option to create a relaxing peaceful ambiance.

Mini chandeliers: The mini chandelier is, as the name suggests, a small chandelier.   These chandeliers are also called chandelettes.  Mini chandeliers are available in numerous designs and styles and can add decor and lighting to small rooms.  Mini chandeliers may also complement other lighting present in the room.  Mini chandeliers tend to weigh less than the larger chandeliers and may be easier to install than the larger heavier designs.

Crystal chandeliers:  Crystal chandeliers are available in different sizes, not just the large size often associated with mansions, classic movies, and wealth.  Crystal chandelier lighting  is made using different types of crystal.  The type of crystal used to make these ornate light fixtures include Swarovski, Rock, Imperial, Regal, and Italian.  The crystal chandelier is also available in clear and color crystal.  As with different chandelier types,  the different types of crystal vary by quality and price.  Indeed, crystal chandeliers can offer an elegant ambiance, if that is the atmosphere the homeowner wishes to create.

Chandelier lighting:  As to the lighting aspect of chandeliers, options include number of lights available on the fixture, as well as total wattage available per fixture.  Another consideration of chandelier lighting is whether the chandelier uses specialty bulbs or standard ones.  Specialty bulbs tend to be more expensive and not as easy to find.  Homeowners may also wish to consider energy usage prior to purchasing a chandelier.  Clearly, the higher the wattage used by the fixture, and the more bulbs the chandelier has, the higher the energy cost tends to be.  However, chandeliers that are designed to be energy efficiency cost less to use.  Moreover, by adding a compatible dimmer switch to control the intensity of the light emitted by the chandelier, dim light, bright light, or degrees of light in between can be enjoyed.  Dimmers also provide homeowners with the option to change the ambiance of the room, by merely changing the intensity of the lighting used.

Chandelier weight: Homeowners will be well served by carefully considering the weight of the chandelier prior to purchasing it.  Chandeliers can significantly vary in weight, depending on material and size of the lighting fixture.  Weight is very important to consider for proper and safe installation.

Chandelier cleaning requirements: Homeowners may also wish to consider, prior to purchasing a chandelier, the cleaning requirements of the chandelier in order to keep the light fixture sparkling.  A more intricate, ornate chandelier tends to require more time to clean. Moreover, if the chandelier has chandelier lamp shades, can the shades be cleaned or will they need to be replaced?

Whether homeowners wish to purchase a candle chandelier, a mini chandelier, a crystal chandelier, or any other chandelier design, homeowners may wish to look on the Internet for lighting stores that sell chandeliers. More specifically, the Home Depot store, which is a large home improvement store, offers their in-store brand of lighting fixtures called Hampton Bay. The Hampton Bay chandelier is available in different designs and sizes, at the Home Depot website. However, many additional habitat lighting options are available at the Home Depot, other than the Hampton Bay brand. Additionally, on the Internet, numerous other websites are available that provide pictures of the numerous different chandeliers available in the marketplace, providing visual assistance with what is available.
